IZMIR, Turkey — Deniz Poyraz, the 38-years-old daughter of a Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) employee, was killed last week when a gunman opened fire inside an HDP office in Izmir, Turkey.
Three of her brothers are still in prison because of their father’s political affiliation, and her father has been jailed multiple times as well. She was the oldest of eight siblings.
Her father says she was the daughter of all Kurds.
Deniz’s alleged killer, Onur Gencer, was arrested on Friday. He has reportedly told people he was willing to kill more people.
The HDP has placed blame for the attack on the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), and its ally, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).
Both the AKP and MHP have condemned the attack.
